Neighborhood Information

The present city of New York began in the area of what is now Lower Manhattan. In 1626, Peter Minuit made the deal of the millennium with his purchase of Manhattan from the local Indians for 24 dollars in trinkets. On February 2, 1653 the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam in what is now Lower Manhattan became a city with a population of 800. The Dutch city of New Amsterdam became a trading center between Europeans and Indians. On September 8, 1664 an English fleet sent by the Duke Of York seized the city of New Amsterdam.

INFORMACÓN SOBRE EL DISTRITO FINANCIERO “DOWNTON”:

El Financial District lo ubicamos en la zona que viene a denominarse Down Town.

Esencialmente se caracteriza por albergar la bolsa de Nueva York y los edificios que acogen las más importantes firmas comerciales del mundo.

Se trata de una zona, que a pesar de estar cada vez más ocupada por apartamentos de particulares y algunos hoteles, sigue siendo eminentemente comercial, con muchísima actividad durante el día, pero apenas movimiento por la noche. Recomendamos levantarse temprano y pasar la mañana recorriéndola. Además de la bolsa y la zona cero, tiene mucho más. Te proponemos un recorrido que puedes modificar a tu antojo, incluso ampliar una vez recorrido moviéndote hacia Soho en dirección norte, o bien noreste hacia China Town y Little Italy.

Una buena opción es comenzar por la mañana con una visita a la Estatua de la Libertad. Para ello debemos llegar hasta Battery Park donde cogemos el ferry. Dependiendo de la época del año, es posible que nos toque hacer cola pero, si no estamos especialmente interesados en llegar y subir a la estatua, otra opción es coger el ferry que llega hasta Staten Island en la Staten Island Ferry Terminal, junto a Battery Park. Es gratuito y el paseo es un espectáculo genial, especialmente en un día con climatología favorable. Procura coger sitio en el lado derecho del ferry y podrás tener unas magníficas vistas de la Estatua desde una distancia bastante aceptable, además de observar el perfil de los rascacielos del distrito financiero de Manhattan. Para llegar hasta aquí, coge el metro hasta Whitehall St. (líneas R o W) o South Ferry (línea 1).

De vuelta toca visitar el punto neurálgico del distrito financiero. Estamos hablando del edificio de la bolsa de Nueva York, en la archiconocida Wall Street con la calle Broad. En esta zona se ubicó el primer capitolio del país donde George Washington se proclamó primer presidente de los Estados Unidos. Podemos ver el monumento de George Washington en la esquina de Wall Street con la calle Nassau. Cerca de aquí, en Bowling Park, encontramos otro de los iconos de la zona, el llamado Bowling Bull o Wall Street Bull, una imponente escultura de un toro en bronce de más de 3000 kilos, realizada por Arturo di Modica, símbolo del agresivo optimismo y prosperidad financiera de la ciudad.

Si avanzamos un poco al noroeste, llegaremos a la tristemente célebre Zona Cero. En la actualidad se continúa trabajando en lo que será la nueva zona comercial y de oficinas presidida por la Torre de la Libertad, ocupando el lugar de las Torres Gemelas. No se puede ver mucho ya que todo el perímetro está cubierto por vallas y lonas, pero paneles informativos describen el proceso y la evolución de los trabajos hasta su prevista finalización en 2009.

Muy cerca de allí, llegaremos a City Hall, donde se encuentra el Ayuntamiento de Nueva York. Cerca está el impresionante Edificio Federal junto al Puente de Brookling.

Para terminar sólo hacer referencia a dos puntos de obligada visita si nos interesan las compras de calzado y ropa o nuevas tecnologías. Frente a City Hall encontramos J&R, donde conseguir artículos de calidad y buenísimos precios en imagen, sonido, nuevas tecnologías y fotografía. En la ya mencionada Zona Cero, se encuentra Century 21. Unos imponentes grandes almacenes con ropa y calzado. Encontramos artículos de primeras marcas con precios a los que han aplicado importantes descuentos.
